For most women, several days of monthly bleeding adds up to six to ten years of their lives, yet menstruation is rarely depicted in visual art.

Madonna of the Menses

Although the biblical Mary was a virgin, she must have menstruated like other women. This image was inspired by a fresco by Fra Angelico. I sat in the monk’s cell, copying the image and later added the blood oozing from her garment.

We exploit animals for their milk, yet we don’t reciprocate. In Milking Cycle, both animal and human provide sustenance for each other.

Milk Flowing into an Urn

Though anatomically impossible, the image features an elegant, low-tech breast pump. The the urn evokes a classical aesthetic.

Childbirth

While the pose is celebratory, her expression reflects something more somber, perhaps due to the precarious position of the baby. Art allows me to imagine a hazardous birth without the dire realities of its dangerous consequences.
